The arrival of a new season means many things for many people—and for us, it means looking back to February’s Fall/Winter 2016 NYFW for a refresh on what’s trending in the world of beauty. We’re happy to report that doing so has us starry-eyed with excitement. Prepare for a wash of color and beauty ranging in tone from dramatic, edgy and unexpected to charmingly laidback and whimsical. And best of all? Incorporating these trends into your everyday look should prove surprisingly easy.

MAKEUP
As you’d expect, dark hues will be making their annual reappearance as the colder months commence. On the eye makeup front, that’s manifesting itself in the form of both the classic black smoky eye (as seen at Chloé, Roberto Cavalli, and more) and rich, exotic jewel tones. Luckily, Aveda’s Autumn/Winter Fōklôr collection offers shades that range from Chia (a dark greyish purple) to Balsam (a cool, deep evergreen).

Darker lipstick this time of year is pretty much a given, but we’re loving this season’s unique takes. The cranberry stain at Bottega Veneta paired every bit as well with the models’ smoldering stares as it will with your favorite fall cashmere, and the glossy plum-hued pouts at Louis Vuitton had us dreaming up next-level night-out looks involving killer black booties and a beloved LBD. Personally, we’ll be reaching for Aveda’s limited edition Nourish-Mint Smoothing Lip Color in Carnelian (a deep brick red) to recreate at home.

And of course: heed your brows. The best-laid beauty plans start with a solid foundation, and impeccably shaped eyebrows and flawless skin (more on that later) will serve as yours. Refresh yourself if need be on your go-to technique for filling in your brows—try this one, for starters—and make sure your plucking is up to par, if you groom them yourself.
On the skin front: keep things looking fresh and dewy rather than overdone by simply touching up with concealer and using a tinted moisturizer rather than full foundation. HAIR
Laidback looks and bohemian vibes abounded at NYFW, with many designers taking cues from menswear. The no-fuss theme wasn’t only apparent in the attire, but in the hair styling choices, as well.
Aveda ArtistJon Reyman dreamed up a beautiful braided look for Leanne Marshall inspired by macramé—a technique that involves knotting to make textiles, rather than to weaving or knitting. The resulting “cobra braids” are appear effortless but intriguing and are equally perfect for day and night.

We’re also seriously smitten with the faux bob Aveda artist Allen Ruiz dreamed up for Public School, as well as the easygoing ponytail crafted by Aveda Global Creative Director Antoinette Beenders (below). Best of all, all three styles are easy to recreate—and look just at home in your day-to-day as they do on the runway.

Of course, your hair color could probably use a seasonal update, too. For blondes, we’re loving the burnished golds and cool ash tones that mimic fall and winter sunlight. Brunettes can benefit from doubling down on rich color with abundant dimension—aim to go a shade darker, but avoid the monotone look with a few well-placed highlights. And all hair colors can benefit from Aveda’s new Eclipting Color technique, which involves strategic lightening to enhance the shape and structure of your face.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The takeaway from it all? This season, there’s something for everyone. From dark and unorthodox to classic and relaxed, it’s easy to incorporate the latest catwalk themes into your daily routine—and look beautiful doing it.
