Temps are finally heating up—which means we’re taking inventory of our sunglasses collections, pondering beach vacations, and refreshing ourselves on the hair and beauty trends that lit up the Spring/Summer 2016 catwalks.

While we’re happy to admire elaborate appliqués and architectural hairstyles from a distance, there are more than a few trending looks that fit perfectly into our everyday lives. Ahead, how to make them work for you.

HAIR

Try a new twist on things.

After years of achingly impossible Pinterest tutorials, your plait savior has arrived in the form of a simple braided twist. We first noticed Aveda’s iteration at Public School, but soon caught wind of similar styles at Proenza Schouler and Celine.

To make it work for you, spritz your strands with hairspray—try Aveda Air Control—before braiding to prevent flyaways and increase hold.

Let your natural texture shine.

Let’s call this hair’s answer to no-makeup makeup. The spring shows saw an impressive number of lead hairstylists eschewing the uniform look of seasons past in favor of showcasing the individual hair types of the models. The result? Looks ranging from the undone, might-have-actually-woken up like that waves at Isabel Marant (below) and Chloé to a simple Bottega Veneta looped bun we guarantee you’ve rocked before. To emulate, ask your stylist about products that ensure good air dry results—we love Aveda Smooth Infusion Nourishing Styling Creme.

Don’t be afraid to embellish.

Remember the Blair Waldorf-induced headband craze of 2008? We’ll be the first to admit that we’ve missed it a little—which is why we were so pleased to see so many accessories making their way down the spring runways. What can we say? The right accessory can do everything from camouflage a bad hair day to spice up an otherwise unremarkable outfit. Among our favorites were the simple black ribbons at Oscar de la Renta (below), the enchantingly ornate barrettes at Rodarte, and the gorgeous silk head scarves at Reem Acra. The key to helping accessories stay in place is adding texture, so try applying Aveda Shampure Dry Shampoo or even a tiny bit of Control Paste to the necessary area.

MAKEUP

Embrace blue eye makeup.

A faux pas this is not—at least not anymore. From deeply saturated teal graphics at Monique Lhuillier to dustings of Persian blue at Marc Jacobs, blue shadow and liner made a bold and fully stylish comeback this season. Dip a toe in by experimenting with navy liner or shadow (a little bit dusted along your lashline is a great smoky eye shortcut—try Aveda’s Petal Essence Single Eye Color in Blue Lapis), or if you’re feeling brave, line the inner corners of your eyes with turquoise à la 3.1 Phillip Lim. We’re particularly smitten with this electric orchid look from Hugo Boss.

Rock a bold lip.

After many a season of clear gloss and understated shades of pink, we were excited to see a proliferation of vivid lip colors making their way down the runway. No shade is off-limits—we spotted everything from fiery coral at Victoria Beckham to inky, wine-hued purple at Cushnie et Ochs. The only rules of thumb? Ask your stylist which shades will pair best with your coloring—the wrong one can wash you out—and keep the look current by paring down the rest of your makeup routine. Just touch up any imperfections with concealer, swipe on a natural-looking mascara (Aveda Mosscara is perfect), and let your lips do the talking–so to speak.

Spring for extra-lush lashes.

Who doesn’t love a good lash moment? Makeup artists embraced adventure when it came to this season’s lashes, delighting us with everything from cartoonishly mod drawn-on lashes at Jeremy Scott to the kind of falsie application that can only be described as art at Louis Vuitton. We found ourselves unexpectedly intrigued by intentionally clumped look that’s been gaining traction of late—and Francesco Scognamiglio’s take was surprising wearable. To recreate, just dust a bit of powder directly onto your lashes between mascara applications.
